    Japanese Bobtail

The 'lucky cat' (Maneki-neko). Japanese Bobtails have a short pom-pom tail, slender athletic body and an outgoing intelligent temperament. The mi-ke (calico) tri-color is the iconic appearance. Generally one of the healthiest pedigreed breeds — the tail mutation does not cause spinal issues like the Manx gene.

    History & Origin

Japanese Bobtails appear in 17th-century Japanese woodblock prints and inspired the Maneki-neko 'beckoning cat' figurine. The breed was imported to the U.S. in 1968 and CFA-recognized in 1976.

    Temperament & Personality

Active, social, vocal. Japanese Bobtails 'sing' in melodic chirps rather than meow, follow humans, and pick up tricks easily.

    Health Watchouts

Top conditions reported by CFA/TICA parent clubs, AAFP, the Winn Feline Foundation, and the Merck Veterinary Manual. Discuss screening with your vet — especially before breeding or insuring.

    Periodontal disease

70%+ of cats by age 3

Plaque hardens to tartar and inflames gums, leading to tooth loss and bacteremia.

Screening: Annual oral exam; daily brushing or VOHC-approved dental treats; professional cleaning every 1–2 years

    Obesity

    ≈60% of indoor cats (AAHA)

Excess weight increases risk of diabetes, arthritis, hepatic lipidosis and shortens lifespan by ~2 years.

Screening: Monthly body condition score (target 4–5/9); measure all food; structured play 2× daily

    Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)

    Breed-elevated risk

Thickening of the left ventricular heart wall — the most common heart disease in cats. Lower than other breeds; recommended to screen.

Screening: Annual echocardiogram from a board-certified cardiologist; DNA test where available (Maine Coon, Ragdoll)

    Deafness

    Limited to white-coat lines

Same Fel d 1 W-gene linkage as in other white cats.

Screening: BAER hearing test of white kittens

    Bladder stones

    Slight elevation

    Encourage water intake.

    Screening: Annual urinalysis

    Enrichment & Play

Athletic, vocal and social — adopt in pairs if alone all day.

    • Tall cat trees
    • Wand toys 2× daily
    • Puzzle feeders
    • Clicker training
    • Harness walks

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Japanese Bobtail's tail safe to handle?

Yes — it's structurally normal but short. Unlike the Manx gene, the Japanese Bobtail mutation does not cause spinal defects.

Why are Japanese Bobtails called 'lucky cats'?

The Maneki-neko 'beckoning cat' figurine — found in shops and homes worldwide — is based on the Japanese Bobtail. The right paw raised brings money, the left paw raised brings customers.
