    Munchkin

The corgi of the cat world. Munchkins have a normal-sized body on very short legs caused by a dominant chondrodysplasia gene. They are playful, affectionate and surprisingly fast — but the breed is controversial: CFA and FIFe refuse to register them on welfare grounds, while TICA accepts them. Research the ethical debate before adopting.

    History & Origin

Munchkins began in 1991 when a Louisiana shelter cat named Blackberry was found pregnant with short-legged kittens. TICA accepted the breed in 1994 amid significant controversy. CFA and FIFe still refuse to register the breed on welfare grounds.

    Temperament & Personality

Friendly, playful, social. Munchkins jump and run normally despite their short legs.

    Health Watchouts

Top conditions reported by CFA/TICA parent clubs, AAFP, the Winn Feline Foundation, and the Merck Veterinary Manual. Discuss screening with your vet — especially before breeding or insuring.

    Lordosis

    ~3.5% of Munchkin kittens

Inward curvature of the spine causing breathing and posture problems. Often fatal.

Screening: Pedigree review; affected kittens identified at 6 weeks

    Pectus excavatum

    Slight elevation

    Sunken chest reducing lung capacity.

Screening: Veterinary auscultation at kitten exam

    Osteoarthritis

    Late-life elevation

    Short-leg joints under more pressure.

Screening: Annual gait observation; lean body weight

    Periodontal disease

70%+ of cats by age 3

Plaque hardens to tartar and inflames gums, leading to tooth loss and bacteremia.

Screening: Annual oral exam; daily brushing or VOHC-approved dental treats; professional cleaning every 1–2 years

    Obesity

    ≈60% of indoor cats (AAHA)

Excess weight increases risk of diabetes, arthritis, hepatic lipidosis and shortens lifespan by ~2 years.

Screening: Monthly body condition score (target 4–5/9); measure all food; structured play 2× daily

    Enrichment & Play

Active but low-climbing; ramps work better than tall trees.

    • Low cat trees with ramps
    • Wand toys at floor level
    • Puzzle feeders
    • Window perches with stair access
    • Daily play

    Nutrition

    Daily calories: Adult: 180–260 kcal/day.

Two measured meals daily; lean body weight is critical to protect joints.

    Common allergens to watch: Beef.

⚠ Every extra pound worsens joint stress — body-score monthly.

    Grooming & Coat Care

Brush weekly (longhair variety 2× weekly).

    Cost of Ownership

    Cost band for Munchkin: medium.

    Living Situation Fit

Apartment-friendly. Low-step houses with stairs to bed/sofa work fine.

    Choosing a Kitten

Choose breeders screening for lordosis and pectus excavatum. Avoid breeders crossing Munchkins with other cats to create 'Skookum,' 'Genetta' or other extreme designer breeds. Pet-quality kittens $500–$1,500.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is it ethical to own a Munchkin?

Debated. Studies show no consistent skeletal disease in Munchkins themselves, but CFA, FIFe and several veterinary associations decline to register them on welfare grounds. If you choose one, work with a breeder who screens for lordosis and pectus excavatum and avoids extreme outcrosses.

    Can Munchkin cats jump?

Yes — they jump, run and climb, just at lower heights. Most Munchkins reach a 24-inch sofa easily but struggle with 4-foot leaps.
